Tulum Travel Diary
Impulsivity won out and we booked two VERY last minute trips to Tulum, Mexico. This was my first time and Kevin’s third. Heading to the airport alone felt so exciting! Our first flight since our travels to Patagonia in February 2020 (pre-covid). I think I missed just being in a room with tons of people. There’s an energy there that I haven’t experienced in 15 months!
We flew into Cancun and still had about two hours until we arrived at our hotel. We took a local taxi and arrived at our first stop, Kan Tulum. It’s an eco-friendly and sustainable treehouse-style hotel, located a bit more inland, and so dreamy! This place is definitely a show stopper! Even driving down the jungly driveway it’s peppered with its “eco-living” and “green vibes only signs” made us so excited to get inside.
The hotel had only opened six months prior and was built sustainably and lived up to its eco-conscious footprint. Their bamboo encased walls are covered in climbing plants that help reduce temperatures, they have solar panels to power their AC units, and they didn’t even take any trees down to build! They let them weave in and out of their hotel along with the show-stopping cenote in the heart of the hotel. We took full advantage of everything this jungly place had to offer. Everything felt so thoughtful and we absolutely loved our time there.
When Kev and I travel we always try and find the best local spots by speaking to those that live there and traveling by scooter (when we can). Our goal is to try and experience each city to its fullest and not stay put in a hotel. That evening, we rented our scooter and headed into the heart of Tulum for street tacos and guacamole. I think we both consumed 15 pounds of guac while on this trip as well as all the margaritas. We also arrived on Cinco de Mayo which made for some lively street performances! Our first night there I just kept saying, “I’m so happy.”
After a few nights at Kan Tulum, hundreds of photos, and a few pounds heavier from all the guac, we scooted over to the beach. We stayed at Mi Amor in an oceanfront suite and while the views and the overall atmosphere were so dreamy, the room itself felt pretty overpriced for what it was. The staff was unbelievably wonderful, the food delicious, and the views and sunrises pretty dang surreal.
Tulum is such an easy flight from Seattle and the beaches here are so pretty! White sands that just go forever. We spent many afternoons walking the beaches and people watching. We even managed to come home without gnarly sunburns, which after 15 months without intense sun, made me feel quite proud!
Overall, we both didn’t feel ready to come home but that makes sense when traveling with your favorite person. We’ve traveled all over the world together but often it’s for work so to do a trip that’s just for us… more of that, please!
Where we ate:
Breakfasts were provided at Kan and were always lots of fresh fruits, coffee, and a healthy buffet spread.
La Malquerida: Such a chill space to eat and people watch! Their guacamole was delicious.
Antojitos la Chiapeneca: This was it for me! These street tacos are fire.
Clan-Destino: This place has amazing burgers but I opted for the ceviche… soooo good!
Mi Amor: The fish tacos here and the guac are the BEST! They top it with dried seaweed but trust us… game changer!
