Books, Articles and People to Follow for Learning How to Talk to Your Kids About Race
With everything happening in the world right now, it’s become more clear than ever that I need to better educate myself, use my voice, and shake up all of my thought patterns. As a white woman, I thought being kind, having a diverse group of friends, and not racist meant I was supporting the black the community, but I now know in order to truly be an ally, I need to actively seek out anti-racist information, read books, listen to podcasts/webinars and learn from black activists, authors and leaders. And while I can speak up all day long on social platforms, it’s just as important to live it in my life at home and in my community. We, as white people - as white parents - need to put in that work and then show up.
To get myself started, and hopefully you as well, below is a list of resources I’m finding helpful as a white woman and also as a white parent. I’m reading and absorbing these things personally, but I’m also making it a point to share them with my kids. In order to build a better future, we have to start with them.
Let’s do the work. Get uncomfortable. REALLY look at our patterns. Let’s educate ourselves so we know exactly what we are standing for and why we are standing. To solve this issue we need EXPOSURE, EDUCATION, COMPASSION, and EMPATHY.
