Everything You Need to Know About Our Garage Update

Did you catch our garage update over on Instagram?? We got inspired, acted a bit on a whim, and took on one of our favorite DIYs to date! Guys, the outcome is such a transformation! And I got quite a few Qs from you guys about the process, what we used, etc., so I thought I'd write up a little blog post so it has a permanent home. :)

Our home was built in the late 70s and while we love every inch of it, our garage definitely felt like a 50+-year-old garage. Spider friends, grease stains, cracks, and all! We started by wanting to paint our garage floor with an epoxy coating and it became a bit more than that but goodness did it turn out beautifully!

We headed to our local hardware store and stocked up on supplies. We felt inspired by Kevin's parents who recently did their garage and it turned out beautifully! To get it all done, we borrowed what we could and purchased the rest. I made a little list below to help anyone looking to do some work on their garage!

Before I dive into the list though, this photo below right here is the after and it gives me ALL the heart eyes!!

What we needed to buy:

Rust-Oleum 240 oz. Gray High-Gloss 2.5-Car Garage Floor Kit

Rust-Oleum1 gal. Cleaner and Degreaser

90 oz. Clear Polycuramine Top Coat Garage Floor Kit

Paint Rollers

5-gallon bucket

4” Paintbrushes

What we borrowed:

Floor Squeegee

Floor Scrubbing Brush

Pressure Washer

With the supplies and random extras we had to run back out for, we spent about $750 on everything. The cost is, of course, very dependent on your garage size and the state of the garage. Ours is an oldie and needed some extra love.

We moved everything out into our carport and started! Almost every step requires some dry/curing time so overall it took us about a week but we added a few steps in. Our previous owners left a lot of paint that they used in our home so we added a fresh coat of paint to the walls and pegboards. We also painted the exposed concrete black - such a cool look! Plus, I painted the giant wooden workbench a pop of color (see below)! We added a vinyl baseboard around the drywall that butted up against the floor as well.

It’s become such a transomed space and we absolutely love that it feels like we added some square footage to hang out in. Ping pong, darts, and a new space for workouts... it’s awesome!
