How I Prolong My Hairstyle
My favorite hair days are always the ones when my hair isn’t so fresh and so clean clean. While I love the act of washing my hair and treating my scalp, the follow-up of drying and styling is one of my least favorite routines. I do shower daily but my hair stays pinned up and I generally only wash it once every 4-6 days. As the days pile on, I add products and eventually introduce braids, buns, and hats.
So here’s my routine:
Day 1:
I wash my hair using Olpalex N3 and N4. What’s in my shower changes a lot but that’s what’s currently in there. Others I love are Dae Hair and Aveda. I dry and style and really limit product on day one. I might use a little bit of Aveda or Living Proof mouse if I know I’m wanting extra volume. I curl my hair using a barrel wand and then use a small dusting of IGK or Oribe texturizing spray
Day 2: I use Aveda Shampowder or Drybar Dry Shampoo at my roots and run a brush through it. On this day my curls are still great so no touch-up needed.
Day 3: I use Aveda Dry Shampure again at my roots and if it feels extra greasy, I bust out the IGK Charcoal Spray. This also might be a messy pony day. I might also add a few curls back in.
Day 4: IGK Charcoal Spray is the workhorse and I have been using it for years. At this point, my hair is either in a slick back bun or braids and a beanie or cap. I use Dae Picklypear Oil or Kerastase for my ends.
Day 5/6: This is almost always a hat day with braids and or a bun and have been loving the slick back look lately. I’ve been feeling hats more since it’s winter and my skin feels pale and my hair is always a little dryer this time of year. If I’m planning to add a mask to my hair it’s often on these nights!
I also rarely cut my hair and my colorist always says that I have extremely healthy hair for someone who doesn’t cut too often and who doesn’t over-process it (I balayage my hair twice per year). I think not washing it has A LOT to do with how healthy it remains!
Happy oily hair, friends!
