10 Things I Learned in 2020
2020 has been quite the year - from the highest highs (getting engaged and moving into our new home!!) to the lowest lows (Covid and lockdown). It’s been a lot for everyone (if you need a little self-care, read this post), but even during the worst times I always try to find a lesson or something I can take away from an experience. Well, there was a lot to take away from 2020, ha, but I managed to narrow it down to 10 things for ya. I do know one thing for sure though, I’m looking very forward 2021 and all it has in store (retreats!!)! So cheers to the end of the year and to everything that’s to come in the new year!
1. Get ready for your day even if you have nowhere to go. I can’t believe how much more productive I feel when I shower and get dressed for the day.
2. Counting back from 5 has created a huge shift in my motivation. This year, I read Mel Robbins’ book, The 5-Second Rule and it’s a game-changer. The second I think about an action I count down 5-4-3-2-1 and then move my body in the direction of my goal before my brain has a chance to talk me out of it.
3. I can live with a lot less! For all of September and October I bounced around with my kids while we waited to move into our new house. We moved from our home in Seattle and went to my parents’, brother’s, and sister’s places in between. I had two suitcases and the kids had a bag of clothes and some toys and life felt so simple! We definitely felt a little ungrounded during those two months but I realized how much “stuff” I had forgotten about until I started unpacking everything in storage. It reminded me how important it is to bring things into the home that I love and serve a purpose versus simply filling a space and taking up room. If my space is cluttered so is my mind!
4. Make your morning routine something you look forward to. During the lockdown, I bought a milk frother (linking my coffee machine that comes with the most amazing frother) and ever since I have felt so excited to start my mornings! The little things can make all the difference when most days feel like Groundhog’s Day (this movie is so funny!).
5. Life is really short. This is such a cliche thing to say but the older I get the more I feel these words. My kids are growing so, so quickly and at times it feels like I will blink and they’ll be out of the house. This year has flown by but also dragged its feet and it’s been a really wonderful gift of extra time with my family now that we all live so much closer.
6. You have enough time. You are just distracted.
7. You will never feel ready and often if you knew how hard it was going to be you may have never started but that’s where the magic lives. We are stronger than we think.
8. Stop feeling like you need to define yourself. We are ever-changing, ever-evolving, and ever-revamping people. Be proud of your content growth.
9. To spend more time with people who remind you to practice courage. And if you’re lucky enough… say ‘yes’ when he proposes to you ;)
10. I learned how to create a macrame headboard with Kevin! Now that we share a bedroom and have a garage to build and make things again I am all over Pinterest and IG looking for ideas! It’s been so fun making things together!
